Evaluating grazing response strategies in winter annuals: A multi‐trait approach

چکیده
Abstract Plants minimize fitness losses through grazing by three fundamental strategies: tolerance, avoidance and escape. Annual species have been traditionally assumed to escape their short life cycle seed dormancy; however, response strategies remain almost unexplored. How traits coordination affect species' responses, whether the generalized model, which posits convergent filtering drought, is applicable this ecologically economically important group thus unclear. We used a trait‐based approach evaluate of winter annuals from Middle East. Across 23 species, we examined 16 hypothesized be relevant for linked them fecundity as proxy simulated in controlled conditions, abundance responses field distribution along large‐scale rainfall gradient. Winter exhibited both lesser extent tolerance indicated (a) independent traits, (b) maintenance higher with more pronounced or under grazing. In natural habitat, but not strategy maintained dry habitats, indicating favouring drought. However, finding at local scale was mirrored shift Synthesis . The drought consistent model. This has developed perennials based on strategy, can extended escape, that should facilitate projecting consequences global change drylands dominated annuals.

Phenotypic plasticity and precipitation response in Sonoran Desert winter annuals.
Temporal environmental variation has profound influences on population dynamics and community structure. Examination of functional traits that influence resource uptake and allocation can illuminate how co-occurring species translate environmental variation into different demographic outcomes, yet few studies have considered interspecific differences in trait plasticity. We experimentally manip...
متن کاملRuminal escape protein supplementation and zeranol implantation effects on performance of steers grazing winter annuals.
Fifty-four crossbred steers (275 kg) were assigned randomly to one of three isoenergetic but not isonitrogenous ruminal escape protein (EP) supplements: high ruminal escape protein (HEP), low ruminal escape protein (LEP), or corn. The supplements contained corn, distillers' dried grains with solubles (DDGS), and fish meal. Supplements were fed at approximately 1.5 kg/d; the HEP and LEP suppleme...

Six abomasally cannulated Hereford steers (12 mo of age, 300 +/- 10 kg) grazing annual ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) paddocks were used in a replicated 3 x 3 Latin square design to determine effects of ruminal escape protein (EP) supplementation on forage intake, fiber digestion, and protein flow to the intestine. Steers were fed one of three isoenergetic supplements: high ruminal escape p...
متن کاملEffect of Concentrate Feeding Level on Production of Holstein Cows Grazing Winter Annuals
A replicated randomized block trial was conducted to determine the response of Holstein cows rotationally grazing annual ryegrass-Crimson clover pasture to supplemental concentrate. Within each of 2 yr, 16 Holstein cows were assigned to one of four blocks by energy-corrected milk yield, days in milk, and parity. Treatments included one of four levels of concentrate based on the following grain ...
متن کاملEvaluating Response Strategies in a Web-Based Spoken Dialogue Agent
While the notion of a cooperative response has been the focus of considerable research in natural language dialogue systems, there has been little empirical work demonstrating how such responses lead to more efficient, natural, or successful dialogues. This paper presents an experimental evaluation of two alternative response strategies in TOOT, a spoken dialogue agent that allows users to acce...
